I survived the first three days of school!!! It went something like this…. Who knows… I would like to blame it on my huge pregnant belly… BUT, I always do this on the first day!!! So… around I made a trip to Kroger. However, it was nice to enjoy my TINY coffee in the dark! Especially because I have these awesome new lamps and a completely NEW classroom!
I went a little crazy with decor and organization this year! You can take a tour of my room HERE. Then… came and I was welcoming 24 new first graders with a hug and a big smile. This sheet was sitting on their desks…. Then, we paired up to learn about a new friend! And that was it… The end of day one! I always have so much more planned and we never get to it!!
After reading Chyrsanthemum , I love to do a directed drawing and them let them paint their work. It gives me the opportunity to really talk about how to use the paint, how to clean up, etc. I love to let my kiddos paint…I try to do it at least once a month.
We also talk a LOT about using glue. I go over this poem with them and then we practice a LOT on this little craft. I pre-cut squares and they make their name with the squares.
You could also cut out bigger squares and let them make the first letter in their name if that works better for your kiddos! To make sure I cover everything I need to, I make sure to check them off my routines checklist. I love having this sheet to make sure I hit everything! All of the photos in this post are linked to my First Week Survival Kit , with the exception of a few other ones.
I hope it was helpful in planning your first week of school! My name is Karla. I have been in 1st grade since forever! I usually freak out in the beginnings , I can say more than the kids. There are many things to do and sometimes you forget about some of them. You really helped me to make up my mind. Oh my goodness, Karla! Thank you SO much for letting me know! Good luck this year!!! I absolutely love this post! You sound like a fab teacher! Hello…can you email me the first week lesson plans also.
First time teaching first grade! Hi Haley, please could you email me, too. Thanks to this post I am extremely excited for my first day back with kiddos tomorrow!!! I can rock this! Thank you SO much for stopping by and letting me know!!!! Haleymoconnor gmail. I really love your ideas. I would like to know a little bit more about how you structure your manipulative exploration and play. Hi Kyla! For stations, we usually take several weeks to roll them all out!
These all look great for homeschoolers teaching in a co-op setting too. Thank you for sharing all these ideas! This is going to be my first year teaching! Thank you for providing these resources and a general run down!
I am anxious and nervous about this coming year! Having something tangible like this helps so much! You have some great advice here! Thank you for sharing. Thank you so much for making this! It gave me so many fabulous ideas!
Would you consider uploading an editable version as well? Hi Jaime! I am having trouble printing your picture of the lesson plans. Are the first week pages included? Hi Teresa! This will be my first year teaching 1st grade after nine years of teaching 4th. Needless to say, I have been feeling a bit overwhelmed. Just wanted to send you a quick thank you for sharing all of your awesome ideas!
Super helpful!! This is the first time I introduced a Kagan structure — round table. After each table synergized, we came back together as a class to create a class bar graph.
Our five name-choices were — Sunny, Fuzzy, Mr. Sunflower, Snowflake, and Trevor. Initially, Sunny and Fuzzy were tied. Once we eliminated all the different choices and we took a re-vote, Fuzzy was victorious. So, friends, I introduce you to Fuzzy! On our second day, we were so excited to meet our Reading Stamina goal of 2 minutes!
After reviewing the Read-to-Self Expectations, we built our reading stamina to 2 minutes 37 seconds — woohoo. A small, but so-important victory. To close out our day, we read the classic — If You Take a Mouse to School… So many of my friends had read the original Numeroff book, so we were able to make some great text-to-text connections! My outside bulletin board has this teaser on it, so I was waiting for my friends to share their ideas!
Join me for weekly classroom updates and free resources that are just-right for your guided math classroom! Thanks so much for joining me. Happy Teaching! Reading your post made me so happy! I am so glad to hear how much you are loving 1st grade and your new school!!
I could literally hear your voice as I was reading this!! So funny! Hope you have a marvelous rest of the week with your sweet students!! It sounds like you had such a wonderful and joyful time starting school! Your students are so lucky to have such an awesome teacher. I can't wait to read more about your journey! I'm not positive I could handle the responsibility of teaching kiddos to read. I did jump from 5th to PK It was a huge shock to my system, but I loved that year. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
I'm highly impressed with your commitment to Daily 5. I would love to read a post about implementing it. Sounds like you're having a wonderful time, dear friend! Your little kiddos are lucky to have you — and so are your new teaching teammates! Oh my gosh I want to be in your class! Your kiddos look like so much fun! I love your moment of panic, as a fourth grade teacher, I'd be panicking too!!
You're clearly going to be an amazing first grade teacher! Have so much fun with the little ones! Can I say how glad I am that you're starting first…now that you're one step ahead I know I'll always have great ideas to implement in class. I can't wait to start my first day in first grade! I agree with Molly- reading your post made me so happy! What an amazing first week and a very lucky group of firsties! What a wonderful thing to read this morning!
I love how you call your kids your friends. Love that! I can just imagine how happy they are each time they hear you refer to them like that.
Happy for you for a fresh, new, collaborative, happy year! Thank goodness that it seems bad years are always followed by really good ones that restore our love for teaching.
